Urban Palnning

From the eighties, and the creation of the metropolitan area of Medellin, the Colombian planners interested in the phenomenon of urban sprawl has increased significantly. Therefore, there has been increasing recognition of the importance and uniqueness of the suburbs to a common problem in many cities in Colombia: the scope and nature are intertwined with built up areas of the city, thereby creating a mosaic isolated green areas inserted in a discontinuous grid, consisting of infrastructure networks, facilities and services that urban centers “spread” in the farm belt. Returning these features can be diagnosed that the suburban areas of big cities of Colombia form a “third territory” where the city’s development, protection and enhancement of landscape agronatural represent a major challenge for urban planning, environmental and land.

Theories related to the development and sustainability of this are still very vague territory, despite specific initiatives and proposals that have appeared in some cities in Colombia, through the work of some international agencies and other municipal entities associated. Surely this is due to instability caused by the inordinate attention that the State and private initiative have given the construction sector, neglecting the rural areas and setting aside the planning tools necessary to achieve a comprehensive geographical space. This problem is exacerbated because of the strong policy emphasis that some sectors of opinion and grant management to distribution of powers between the state and local authorities, creating a fundamental problem in the formulation of appropriate policies for the protection of peri-urban areas ..
